People only just realising what the 'spring' on their wall is really for | Express.co.uk

Oct 25, 2024

Many people have come across a random spring behind their doors and have often wondered what it’s for.

Apart from the obvious purpose of stopping the door handle from bashing against the wall, one user on TikTok was stumped to find out it has another handy use.

Tammy Vega, a TikTok user who goes by @tammyvega05, recently posted a video explaining how she discovered the full function of this hidden "door feature."

In her video, Tammy shared that her daughter’s bedroom door kept closing on its own, prompting her to suggest that the youngster get a doorstop.

To her surprise, her daughter replied that she already had one.

"She goes, 'Mum, I have a door stop already,'" Tammy said, before zooming in on the small spring-loaded door stop attached to the skirting board.

Tammy initially thought it was just to prevent the door handle from damaging the wall, but soon realised it had a hidden feature she never knew about.

"She had to show me," Tammy added in the video.

"You just put your foot on top of the door stop, push the door down, and it holds the door in place."

In a quick demonstration, she hooked the doorstop underneath the bottom of the door to keep it from closing - a simple but highly effective method.

The revelation sparked widespread amazement across TikTok, with many viewers expressing their own disbelief.

One person commented: "Not me sitting up looking at my door stopper on my wall, baffled."

Another viewer wrote: "All those hours in timeout playing with this spring, and I never learned that."

The Hiatt Hardware website confirms this, explaining that "spring doorstops use a spring mechanism and a rubber stopper to prevent your doors from knocking into your walls and skirting boards.

“The spring allows the door to bounce away from the wall when opened."

Tammy’s discovery has resonated with many, showcasing how even the most familiar household items can still surprise us with hidden functionality.

As one TikTok user aptly put it: "Why did I even go to school when I've learned so much on TikTok?"
