Daniel Starr Lists $22.8 Million Santa Barbara House

May 01, 2023

Back in spring 2022, soon after Daniel Starr sold a sprawling Santa Barbara mansion for nearly double the $13.2 million he paid for the place a year before, the tech entrepreneur-turned-real estate investor doled out $13 million for a storied estate in the heart of Montecito. Now the revamped property has popped up for sale, dressed to the nines and asking an eye-popping $22.8 million. The listing is held by Eric Haskell of The Agency.

Originally a carriage house for one of the area's first grand estates — designed in 1895 by notorious Gilded Age architect Stanford White, who is largely known for his work on the Washington Square Arch, Newport's Rosecliff mansion and circa-1890 version of Madison Square Garden — the premises underwent an extensive remodel during Starr's tenure, complete with an elevator and a "secret" bookshelf door that leads to an upstairs master retreat.

Tucked away behind triple gates and a meandering driveway that passes over a storybook bridge, amid a gated 1.65-acre parcel of land in the exclusive Glen Oaks Estates community, the white wood-shingled structure is framed by stunning views of the surrounding Santa Ynez Mountains. Once inside, almost 10,000 square feet of elegant living space boasts dark hardwood floors, built-ins and designer lighting throughout.

Especially standing out is a library and bar room. Other highlights include a soaring sky-lit great room holding a fireside family room, dining area, and sleekly designed Danish Vipp kitchen outfitted with stainless countertops, dual islands and top-tier Miele appliances. The aforementioned master retreat sports a striking vaulted ceiling laced with exposed beams, as well as a cozy sitting area, walk-in closet, and luxe bath spotlighted by dual vanities, a soaking tub and shower.

Heading outdoors, you’ll find park-like grounds dotted with olive trees, gardens and numerous patios, and hosting a reflection pond, fire-pit lounge and bocce ball court. There's also a 1,000-square-foot guesthouse with its own en-suite bedroom, kitchen, living room and sliding glass doors opening to an attached deck.

Starr, founder of the video game streaming service GameMine, has acquired and developed numerous multimillion-dollar properties in Southern California since 2013, including a dated Beverly Hills home he bought, renovated and subsequently sold to Rihanna for nearly $14 million.
